Aussies love their utes more than any other body style of vehicle. In fact, to the end of November, total sales of Pickup/ Cab Chassis 4×4’s were up 9.1 per cent compared with the same time last year (VFACTS). The story is different for 4×2 utes, with an 8.8 per cent decrease year-to-date.

With an influx of new utes hitting the market every year, less and less manufacturers are offering 4×2 or single cab variants of their utes. Chinese utes in particular, generally offer a dual cab, 4×4 configuration as standard – which has put a lot of pressure on the status quo from a value point of view.

Another phenomenon, which we can’t ignore, is the proliferation of giant American pickup trucks, growing in market volume significantly compared with last year.

Let’s take a look at the best utes to buy in Australia in 2024, with an explanation as to the benefits of each model. Bear in mind, we will be focusing on the most affordable version in each model’s range, as inflationary and cost-of-living pressures mean many Australians are feeling the pinch and want the best bang for their buck in 2024.

2024 LDV T60 Max

With this starting price, it’s hard to believe that the T60 Max features 4×4 as standard. You also get Apple CarPlay (but no Android Auto), a five star ANCAP rating and a 7 year/200,000km warranty. While the twin-turbo diesel 2.0-litre engine can be a little bit laggy off the line, it really offers a strong value proposition, which is why sales have grown significantly in the last year. A production version of the LDV GST concept shown at the 2023 Shanghai Motor Show will eventually replace the T60 down the track.

Starting Price: $34,990 driveaway for ABN holders

Payload: 925kg (Pro), 750kg (Luxe)

Towing Capacity (braked): 3000kg

2024 GWM Ute Cannon

As one of the most affordable utes on the market, GWM, or Great Wall Motors offers a lot of metal for the money. The 2024 model boasts an eye-catching design and a spacious cabin loaded with modern features. Its diesel engine promises efficiency and sufficient power, though it may fall slightly behind in towing capacity when compared to some of its more established rivals.

Keep an eye out for the 2024 GWM Cannon Alpha – a slightly larger and more premium ute, which has been spotted testing locally. It may even be offered with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 or a hybrid powertrain.

Starting Price: $35,990 (driveaway) 4×2

Payload: 1050kg

Towing Capacity (braked): 3000kg

2024 Isuzu D-Max

Ever since the D-Max was introduced to Australia, Isuzu Ute has gone to great lengths to establish it as one of the toughest and most durable performers in its class. With consistent sales growth over the last few years, it is cemented into the Australian psyche as a tough ute.

While entry level models are powered by a 1.9-litre turbo-diesel generating 110kW 350 Nm, further up the range you can choose a 3.0-litre with 140 kW/450Nm and higher towing capacity as a result. It’s worth noting that the 2024 Mazda BT-50 shares its genes with the D-Max, and is therefore also worthy of consideration. Keep an eye out in mid-2024 for a cosmetic facelift for the D-Max.

Starting Price: $32,200 (before on-road costs) for single cab 4×2

Payload: 1405kg

Towing Capacity (braked): 2800kg (3500kg on other models)

2024 Mitsubishi Triton

The freshest arrival on the market, the Triton has been treated to a new-generation refresh. Boasting a tougher looking exterior and a much more comfortable and modern interior than its predecessor, the Triton will almost certainly increase its market share in 2024.

Best of all, the twin-turbo 2.4-litre turbo-diesel generates 150kW and 470Nm, with a class-leader equalling 3500kg braked towing capacity.

Starting Price: $43,690 (before on-road costs) for GLX 4×2

Payload: 1080kg

Towing Capacity (braked): 3500kg

2024 Toyota HiLux

No Aussie ute roundup is complete without the mighty HiLux. Mid-2024 sees the arrival of a 48V mild-hybrid variant, promising a slight fuel efficiency boost but not a full EV revolution – despite the fact an EV HiLux is presently being tested locally.

The familiar, robust HiLux DNA remains, with potential tweaks to the infotainment system and safety features. Expect the same unwavering loyalty from HiLux fans. Whether you go for the basic but honest WorkMate or the almost Lexus-like luxury of the Rogue, they say you can’t go wrong with a ‘Luxy.

Starting Price: $26,475 ( before on-road costs) for single cab 4×2 WorkMate

Payload: 1310kg

Towing Capacity (braked):2500kg (3500kg on other versions)

2024 Ford Ranger

Having recently been treated to an update, the Ford Ranger ( along with its new Volkswagen Amarok brother) is one handsome beast. That is more than skin deep however, with one of the most practical trays in its class. Not only that, but with a massive 12.4-inch tablet-style screen in some models, it’s hard to argue against the 2024 Ford Ranger having the most accomplished interior in its class.

It excels in towing capacity and off-road abilities, thanks to cool features like an integrated trailer brake switch on some models and selectable modes on 4×4 models.

Starting Price: $35,930 (before on-road costs) for single cab 4×4 auto

Payload: 1441kg

Towing Capacity (braked):3500kg

2024 Ford F-150

One of the biggest phenomena of 2023 was the increase of demand for USA-made, locally remanufactured large pick-up trucks. Ford has just joined the fray, with the twin-turbo V6 powered F-150. Whatever you think about these lumbering leviathans on our roads, there’s no denying this thing has presence, capability and luxury.

Look out for the Toyota Tundra to join the party soon too.

Starting Price: $106,950 (before on-road costs)

Payload: 769kg

Towing Capacity (braked): 4500kg

2024 Chevrolet Silverado

Although this one does have a slightly higher entry price than its chief rivals, it has the grunt to back it up. A 6.2-litre V8 develops 313kW and 624Nm, backed by a robust 10-speed automatic.

Take your pick between the luxurious LTZ Premium with Tech Pack, or the ZR2, which is a more off-road focused version with a serious attitude.

Its size and fuel efficiency, however, may not be ideal for day-to-day driving – if you’re an inner-city nimby, that is. Are you game enough to take one for a drive? If so, you’ll be surprised by how quick and easy to live with it is.

Starting Price: $128,000 (before on-road costs)

Payload: 757kg

Towing Capacity (braked): 4500kg

2024 RAM 1500

Boasting a lower entry price than its bow-tied arch-rival, the RAM 1500 Express is a very solid contender with space and grunt for days. Its 5.7-litre HEMI engine produces a formidable 291kW and 556Nm, but may be replaced by the Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six soon.

Recently-revealed hybrid versions, such as the 2024 RAM RamCharger could end up seeing their way here as well.

Starting Price: $98,950 (before on-road costs)

Payload: 830kg

Towing Capacity (braked): 4500kg
